Best Friends, Jamaica and the Royal Family

I can’t believe that I am just now getting to talking about my amazing weekend getaway with the bestie to Jamaica. Last week was non-stop from the moment we landed until.. well.. it hasn’t stopped. But that’s the reason we take getaways, isn’t it?Β  It forces us to make the world stop even if it’s just for a moment or a day or a weekend. If you’re really lucky, you can make it stop for a week or so.

“God made us best friends because he knew that our moms couldn’t handle us as sisters.”

I have been blessed to know lot of amazing people in my life but the “sisters” that I have, make my life whole. Yes, my husband and my kids are my world, but they haven’t been around nearly as long as some of my best friends. These are the people who have seen me at my best, my worst, my crazy, my bad hair of the 80’s.. they’ve seen me through hook ups and break ups, jobs, moves, pregnancies, engagements and weddings. And somehow, I’ve managed to not scare them off. Nor have they scared me off. I fully predict that we will be together until we retire and mother nature finally makes her final statement.

And the only thing better than best friends, is getting away with your best friends.

Jen had the premonition a few weeks ago that she was going to have enough of Winter and the mundane, day-to-day tasks of living in Suburbia. She’s not psychic just smarter than me to think that far ahead. I’m grateful it was me she called to ask to be her sidekick because it’s been far too long that I’ve been out-of-town. I didn’t even care where we went.. just though it was south, had sand and sun and did not have kids, husbands or agendas.

girls weekend to jamaica

We stayed at the Half Moon Resort which was one of the most quaint places I’ve ever seen. I’m a sucker for nostalgia and this place had it all and then some. Apparently, it was a favorite of the Royal family of England AND America (hello.. the Kennedy’s…). All over the place were black and white photos of days gone by and even a copy of Jackie O’s only known last will and testament that she had written on the resort’s stationary. Everywhere you turned there was some piece of history that just whisked you back to days you never knew. The cottage that we stayed in was part of the original cottages and you could tell by the design of the rooms. The detailed ceilings, the GIGANTIC bathroom with the floor to ceiling armoir, the black and white tiles. If it weren’t for the wi-fi and color tv’s in the room, you could have sworn we were back in the 60’s.Β  We had a private viewing of the dolphins when they were on break, toured the property on replica, vintage bikes and I had a dinner of flaming meat.

It was an awesome weekend that didn’t last nearly as long as I would have liked. And while i loved the resort, the food, the sun and the sand, it was spending time reconnecting with my best friend that was the best part. Your husband (or partner!) won’t always tell you what you need to hear and your kids waffle between needing you and needing you gone. But your best friends will always tell it like it is and if you step out of line or waiver on your stance, they’ll call you out in a heartbeat. Or let you convince them why your views have changed. They’re the ones who keep us straight, honest and true to ourselves and I for one, don’t tell mine often enough how much they mean to me.

Wow! This looks amazing! I don’t even know if I could actually function if I had the opportunity for a girls getaway with my friends! At this point, we’re lucky to be able to string two complete sentences together without interruption, or text each other without being elbowed by a small child. πŸ™‚

Great pics!

The friends that I have memories with dating back to my childhood, those are the people that know me better than anybody else in the whole wide world. πŸ™‚ How great you got to do something as fun as this!!

So glad you came over!! Seriously.. it’s like you look at your friends and are like “now, what were we saying… 5 years ago when we COULD say something??”. It’s like your spouse.. you have to make the time to reconnect with them AND your friends. I wish the Rooster would get out of town.. we all deserve reconnecting with our pre-kid selves and friends πŸ™‚

This looks amazing – we never really travel much, and I’m usually okay with it, but I’m totally jealous of your exotic trip!

Thanks for commenting on my post because it allowed me to find your blog! I love it and look forward to following you. My house is the opposite of yours – should have named my blog “One Hen, Three Roosters!”

omg. omg. omg. I’m glad you realize how lucky you are. in so many ways! these pictures! I know you had a fabulous time! every year my BFFs from college and I always make it a point to get together. Usually just a girls’ weekend or something easy because most of us have young kids. This is so wonderful that you do this for yourself and as best friends. It’s important to reconnect, I think. Does our souls some good πŸ™‚ LOVE.

I DO realize how lucky I am. I felt a little bad leaving the family behind but it was SO good for me to get away and recharge and the BFF and I don’t spend nearly as much time together as we should. And I rode a bike. I think it’s been 20 years. At least. Maybe more.
