My Kind of Boot Camp – Bloggy Boot Camp Recap and Link-Up!

I hear all you girls talking about getting up at 5am to go to Boot Camp and every now and then I think to myself  “Kristen – you should get yourself to Boot Camp”. So I finally did it! Except it was MY kind of boot camp. The kind where I sat in a room full of like minded people (women) working out our blog concepts instead of our biceps and the only curls going on were the ones on my head and the ones on our faces from smiling so much.

THIS is Bloggy Boot Camp, y’all!

Remember back at the beginning of the year when I set my goals for this year? One of them was to go to a couple of conferences so when I saw that the SITS Girls were bringing their traveling roadshow to Charlotte, I was like HELL YEAH!*, I’m going! So I bought my ticket, rounded up some of the BWTs (woot! a conference that I didn’t have to plan and we’d still get to be together.. bonus!) and we headed down. bwts in charlotte

There were so many great things that Tiffany and Fran did from making us rotate tables to making sure we met new people (bloggers can be bad about cliques), to making sure we were well caffeinated (I was one of 5 ambassadors for Keurig/Brew Over Ice..more on that later) and well fed (hello, Salsarita’s?!) to bringing in some amazeballs speakers. I learned so much more than I expected to and came home with a homework list that you wouldn’t believe.

While the learning was good, the lovin’ was better.

My favorite part about these kind of conferences is finally putting faces to names, blog titles and Twitter handles. It’s awesome to be surrounded by people who don’t look at you odd when you talk about things like bounce rates, analytics, commenting plug-ins and when you talk warmly about your “online friends”.  Today’s social media friendships are viewed about as favorably as dating services in the 90’s. Until you do it, you just aren’t going to get it.

I got to meet Michelle over at A Dish of Daily Life, who is one of my newest favorite blogger friends AND she’s also who won the Uncommon iPhone case earlier this month!kristen and michelle at bbc

I met new friends who are awesome writers & funny as all get out. Who like to pretend they’re Reese Whitherspoon when told there’s a 3 hour wait at The Cowfish but who can’t follow instructions to save their lives. Like when I told them to walk in a straight line so we could totally get an Abbey Road shot…

I have some great take-aways from the conference.. one of the BIGGEST is that I will be putting a lot more focus on Ten To Twenty Parenting. Blogging is a VERY crowded market and after spending  some time talking to Tiffany of SITS, she confirmed what I knew – the need for advice and writing in the teen/tween market is big. I’m not disappearing from here, but will be actively looking for new things for that site.

The other thing that I took away is at least 60 new friends who can all share and help each other grow. I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to introduce them ALL to you one at a time. Thinking about having one a week come and guest post… hhmmm… sounds like I have more homework!

To all you ladies who I met this weekend, I loved meeting and getting to know you! I’m looking forward to getting to know you better!! To Tiffany, Fran and everyone else at SITS and Bloggy Boot Camp – thanks for an awesome weekend. You girls sure know how to put on a show!!

* One of the best lessons of the day was from Tiffany and Danielle of Extraodinary Mommy when talking about taking on too much.. “If it’s not a HELL YEAH! it’s a NO! Those are words to live by, friends.

I don’t think we got to chat 🙁 Thanks so much for putting this linky together. I have linked up.

It was such an amazing day. You are right, people just don’t understand the virtual friendship until they’ve stepped into this world. My blog to-do list is a mile long as well. Good luck with the new tween writing avenue. Maybe we’ll get to chat at another conference.

I had so much fun meeting you! Hopefully I’ll be able to make a Raleigh blogger meetup this summer/fall. Thanks for hosting this link-up. Also, thanks for being utterly fantastic.

BTW, I have that quote by Danielle in my post as well! Apparently great minds think alike 😉

It was a great conference, and I was thrilled to meet you in person. The thing that surprised me most was how much the conference encouraged me. I expected to learn a lot of good information, but I didn’t expect to hear messages that really touched me, like “Why not me? Why not now?” and “What is your end game?” (I also liked, “Crazy always shows itself!”) My frustration now is that this is one of the busiest times of the year in my job that actually pays me money (!), so I’m having trouble even pulling together my list of things I learned and need to do.

Oh lord.. yesterday was a tough day trying to focus. I think the next time I do a conference like this I will take the next “work” day off, check into a library cubicle and just go to town with the homework.

Hey.. is this your card?! (still cracks me up)

Kristen, it was great meeting you. I loved your recap. You reminded me of some things that are still floating around somewhere in my head. You have some amazing ideas. Maybe we’ll meet again at another conference.

What a fantastic day! I still have butterflies every time I think about everything I’m going to be improving and doing differently as a result of something I learned from this one conference.

10to20 – watch out, because here we come 🙂

Such a wonderful time we had! I think I briefly met you…and I’m sad I didn’t get to talk to you more. It was so good to find such supportive ladies in the blog world! Looking forward to following you on your blog journey and more of your take aways from the conference 🙂

And THAT is the one bad thing about these conferences.. you just don’t have enough time to meet everyone!! I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone better off line as well!

May 21, 2013 at 9:11 am

Love this recap! I totally know what you mean about people not “getting” having online friends. I have some good friends I met on social media and it’s always hilarious explaining to people how we met.

And I was totally in synch with your “cliquey” point of view. It’s just not necessary.. we’re ALL in this together. I’m bracing myself for a lot more of that when I hit BlogHer in July.. that’s one where I’ve heard is particularly bad.

Kristen, so nice getting a chance to meet you and totally agree with your review of the conference: fun, great ideas, lots of info and lots of homework! Looking forward to your updates on “Ten to Twenty” as well – I’m in that world and it’s definitely not easy!

Awww…thanks for the blog love! It was very cool to meet so many of my online friends, including you! Bloggy Boot Camp was an incredible experience…no other way to describe it! One, it’s a unique opportunity to put names with faces…I can’t tell you how many times I sat down at a new table and found that the person next to me was someone I tweet with! And the content was great…there is so much to learn! Tiffany and Fran do a great job of explaining things in a way that is understandable! So glad I went!
