I saw a post this past weekend (on Cathy E’s Facebook page!!) of the tribute to Billy Joel when he received his Gershwin Prize and it was… a celebrity filled sing-along of Piano Man and was fabulous, of course! I started thinking abotu all the incredible songs that we all sing really, really loudly when we hear and them especially if there are cocktails involved. (The great Jimmy Buffett calls them “songs we know by heart”) So I decided to put together a list of what I think are some of the best sing-alongs and with a little help from my friends (hey – another great one!) I think this is a pretty awesome list. I thought I would do 5 but by the time all was said and done, there were so many more than that.
Honestly, I could have kept going.. there are SO many to choose from. Make sure you leave your favorites that aren’t listed in the comments because I know I’ll be doing a follow-up (Broadway, hello!!!) Without further ado, I give you the greatest sing-alongs of all time. And yes.. I realize that the song depicted in the image below is NOT on the list. Next time.
We Are the Champions – Queen
This is the LiveAid version because, well.. why not?! Bonnie D. gave this most excellent suggestion. This song is so great even all of our KIDS know it by heart.
Brown Eyed Girl – Van Morrison
I’ll be honest. If I never heard this song again, I’d be okay. But no sing-along list would be complete without it, so there you go.
Piano Man – Billy Joel
This is the version from December where he was awarded the Gershwin Prize. Many, many of you suggested this one!
You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling – Righteous Brothers
The Bestie threw this one in the hat and since she’s a purist, I had to make sure I got a version from the Righteous Brothers but I also had to use the best known reference to it.. Top Gun.
Why Don’t We Get Drunk – Jimmy Buffett
Randy W (who else) threw this one in the hat and it’s a classic.. picking just ONE Buffett song was a challenge, for sure. But make sure you watch the whole video.. you won’t be sorry.
Like, Totally Tubular Sing-Alongs
Oh Mickey – Toni Basil
We were ALL cheerleaders when this song came on.. Right?
Mony Mony – Billy Idol
The REAL party version.. 😉 so don’t be listening to it around the kids. Unless you want to explain what “GET LAID GET X$&” means..
Don’t You Forget About Me – Simple Minds
If ever a movie defined the 80’s generation, it was this one and Ferris Bueller. But this is one I still love to watch over and over again. Phillip O gets the hat-tip here but his BIG hat-tip is yet to come 😉
Jack and Diane – John Mellencamp
If The Breakfast Club was the movie that defined our generation, then this was the song. Did you know that the couple depicted in this song was originally supposed to be interracial and the record label said “no way”.
Bar Room Brawlin‘
Family Tradition – Hank Williams Jr
Barclay W gave me this one.. Why DO you drink? Pfft. To get drunk, of course.
You Never Even Called Me By Name – David Allan Coe
Another (cowboy)hat-tip to Barclay W! You don’t have to call me darlin’..
Wagon Wheel – Darius Rucker version
This one’s from cousin Misha and I opted for Darius’ version since he’s a Carolina boy and I used to serve him drinks at Fuzzy Ducks when he and Hootie were on the rise.
The Gambler – Kenny Rogers
I’m so glad this song popped back up in the commercials recently. Kenny’s got a lot of good sing-a-longs but this one’s the best. Now, about that plastic surgery, Kenny…
Devil Went Down to Georgia – Charlie Daniels Band
Aww yeah… Every time I hear this song, I just KNOW that I can learn to play the fiddle. Kelly H. got this one spot on.
Not putting this in any order except for the last one.. which is my all-time favorite sing-along.
Paradise by the Dashboard Light – Meatloaf
My daddy told me once that this was his and his 2nd wife’s “song” and that fact alone should have told him how that marriage going to end.
Don’t Stop Believing – Journey
Look.. if you’re riding in the car and this song comes on and the people with you don’t start singing at the top of their lungs, you need to throw them out of the car. Even if it’s moving. You don’t need that kind of negativity in your life.
Sweet Caroline – Neil Diamond
This one could possibly be THE all-time best sing-along for most of us and it was close 2nd for me. I especially love this version at Fenway Park. A lot of you love this one, too.
So.. my personal favorite sing-along of all time is…..
Friends in Low Places – Garth Brooks
Because I love you guys so much, I give you the version where he performed with Justin Timberlake in Nashville. Swoon. I just love this song so much.. especially because you don’t get to hear the illustrious 3rd verse too often. And now, I’m really sad that I didn’t see him in concert when he played Greensboro like 100 times last month. The funny thing is that it took a while for people to throw this one into the hat but you know who you are.. because we’re all as high as that ivory tower…
Like I said earlier… leave your favorite in the comments so I can get it in a follow up!!
