So You Think Kids Act Bad on Social Media?

…You should see how their parents act.

We have had our fair share of bad weather this winter here in NC.. Mother Nature has been nothing short of bipolar.. 70 degrees one bad-school-tweetsday, an inch of ice the next.  The kids have had delays, early dismissals and have missed more days this school year than they have in almost 30 years. It’s been one helluva winter and we are ALL ready for it to be Spring.

One of the quickest ways that I personally have gotten information about anything dealing with delays, closings, etc. is by following our school system on Twitter and they have done a spectacular job of communicating using social media. I’ve watched the person behind that Twitter account really grow into the role and as a social media professional, I love it. They used to be very limited with their posts and little to no engagement but this year, they’ve been on it. Same goes for our sister school system in the next county, Guilford County.

I don’t know why I’m surprised by this, but I am blown away by how people interact and tweet to the school systems. The kids are one thing but you wouldn’t believe that in some cases the worst offenders have been the parents! Here were some of the ‘better’ tweets to the school’s twitter account:

@wsfcs we just about died on a really iced over bridge! You call school off tomorrow. (You need school. Your grammar sucks.)

.@wsfcs Today was UNACCEPTABLE! Just because our “new” superintendent isnt from here is NO EXC– USE. She has slack advisors!!!!! (this was a mom. who apparently has never managed thousands of moving parts.)

Oh, & another thing @wsfcs sending a pitiful email explaining ur lack of duty that I can’t respond to just makes matters worse! #homeschool (same mom as above who wasn’t happy with the email that went out explaining the quick release decision. And what’s with the #homeschool hashtag? Is your kid IN school or not?)

@wsfcs the farmers almanac said that it’d be bad outside today! Y’all are a bunch of ignorant liberals. (Yes, because the school system uses the Farmers Almanac for making decisions.)

And across the county line….

@GCSchoolsNC You’ll never please everyone, yet you’ve kept our children safe for many decades.I’ll respect any decision you make. (yay to this lady because she’s right.. it’s not like they WANT to tick people off)

@GCSchoolsNC as parents we are OVER robo – calls that repeat the greeting and nothing else. How about letting parents know b4 TV stations? (sorry that letting hundred of thousands people know at the same time isn’t quick enough for you)

Y’all need to stop being hood rat children and sending @GCSchoolsNC hate cause they haven’t canceled school. #yourenotfunny (another YAY for this mom…. )

@GCSchoolsNC will do all of the following XCEPT A)Give updates B)Do their job C)Say “just the mesenge… (sorry that we just deliver the message, not create the news…)

Okay… I could go on and on but you get the point.

People.. our school systems using social media to communicate is a SERVICE to you. They don’t have to do it. The people that are behind these accounts DO NOT MAKE THEY MESSAGE.. they only deliver it. Don’t kill the messenger. I understand that we are ALL frustrated by all the bad weather but you can’t take it out on the school system because Mother Nature is whacked in the head. The same people that are bitching about our kids not being IN school are the same people that would be suing our schools if their kids were in an accident if the schools didn’t delay or cancel.

You can NOT sit on both sides of the fence. Either be grateful that the schools are conservative and make the call or be pissed but you cannot be both.

Adults complain that our kids need to watch what they do on social media and while that is true, YOU – the adult – also needs to watch what YOU do. Like everything else, if you aren’t walking your own talk, how can you expect your kids to listen to what you say?? The one mom whose tweets I used above is a perfect example. Reading thru her other tweets, I was amazed at some of the things that she sent out.

It’s sad that common sense has to be pointed out but, alas, it does. I know that people are frustrated and I know that people want to complain, but please remember that what you put out there isn’t just seen by the other person – it’s seen by everyone. And remember – these people are part of the administration. The same administration that can and will take action against you or your kid for what is considered threatening behavior.

And give these people some slack. They’re messengers, not decision makers. Hate the game, not the player.

It has been interesting, hasn’t it? I think people get so caught up in their own lives that they forget these decisions affect thousands of people – not just their family or their neighborhood. I can’t say I have agreed with everything GCS has den, but I try to remember that I don’t see the whole picture the way they do and I trust that they have the best interest of ALL students and staff in mind. At the very least, I don’t make myself look like an imbecile by tweeting nasty, ignorant comments! 🙂

And having it frozen in place forever and ever? That’s because we have common sense. You know what’s funny? Is how different GC & FC has been this year.. there were days you guys had delays and we didn’t and vice versa. Such a weird winter. #ComeOnSpring

Oh dear. I fear I am an “ignoral liberal.”
Would it be weird if I tweeted to that account – “Hey everyone, GREAT job. Thank you.”?
Even though I’m some nobody up in New England!

I’m stunned at some of those tweets. It’s sad so many people don’t take 30 seconds to consider what they’re saying and who they’re saying it to. It’s one thing to complain to a friend but to put that ugliness out there with intent and direct it at someone just relaying message – wow. We go through similar robo-calls and early morning notices here because many times the call can’t be made until the early AM hours, although I’d prefer not to be woken at 530AM I can at least appreciate that the kids are home and safe.

The people writing like that probably think they’re making a point. I’ll bet the point they’re making is far different from what they intend.

Wow, those were some *interesting* tweets. Parents can definitely be worse than the kids. My kids love it when they hear it from someone who is friends with a bus driver, as they call them first. News travels fast! I hate the wakeup call at 5 am just as much as the next person but I am not going to get on twitter about it. Most of the time I am glad they cancel because I’d prefer my kids are not out of the roads.

Wow. Just wow. You’re right, the parents are way worse than the children. Children are young and foolish. What excuse do these parents have. They should really be ashamed of themselves. I’m embarrassed for them…

As for the #homeschool lady, it’s a good think I’m not running social media for that school, because my reply would have been #goforit

I read that #homeschool tag as a threat – as in “I’m gonna pull my kids out of school and homeschool them because you guys are idiots”. Like the school system would care. And yeah – good like with that, lady.

I’m frequently grateful that I don’t have the responsibility for “making the call”. I’m impressed that your school system is on Twitter! I never cease to be amazed at the protection people feel when they speak through computer… excellent, and sad, post!
