What a tangled web we weave, when first we learn to deceive.
Ah… the complicated art of lying. It seems as soon as we learn to talk, we learn to manipulate. Whether it’s something as simple as “no, I didn’t eat the last cookie” or more complicated like lying to your parents that you went to a friend’s house when, in fact, you went to a raging party with no parents there.
As parents, we have a finely tuned BS meter and if you’re smart… you never let your kids know when you’re on to them. I’ve talked before about busting my kids in lies not because they lied to my face but because they did something stupid like push out a tweet or an Instagram picture that put them in a place that is NOT where they told me they were going to be. (Have I told you about the time I discovered that someone had snuck friends in after we’d gone to bed??)
But if you’re like me, you don’t lie to your kids (other than that whole Santa, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy stuff) so how is it that they learn to spin tales? No matter that we tell them that even if they do something really bad, the punishment for telling the truth is always lighter than lying to us, it just never sinks in.. I know it didn’t for me either. I mean really.. is there ANY feeling worse than getting busted in a lie and being confronted about it? Just thinking about that feeling makes me anxious.
Hollywood has made a lot of money off of making shows that showcase lies.. whether it’s someone hunting down the truth like Revenge or whether it’s a cast of characters trying to find out whodunit like the girls in Pretty Little Liars, you are never short of entertainment that is all about lies. Ironic, isn’t it? A city built on lies making money off the same??
What are some of the great series you can find the best kept secrets and lies? Here are a few that are geared to the adults and teens in the group.. we’re big fans of PLL (Pretty Little Liars) and while I haven’t seen Revenge in a couple of seasons, I fully intend to head back and watch the series as I found it to be really well written. One that I haven’t seen at all that’s definitely on my “must see” list is Bloodline (hello, Kyle Chandler!!)

7. Spy School
No lie.. I’m writing this post from 30,000 feet in the air on the way to Scottsdale to get some quiet time with the Rooster. He’s watching some Brad Pitt movie while I’m getting some stuff finished. There’s a guy next to me who’s been traveling for 26 hours and he’s passed flat out catching flies with his mouth.
What’s the best lie you’ve told your kids or they’ve told you? Are you into any of these shows and if so, which one keeps you coming back?
